Note

He went from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Onondaga, New York, in 1804 and taught school for several years. In 1815, he entered into a Mercantile partnership at Onondaga, with his brother Oliver, and was engaged in successful trade for 25 years. He renounced the sale of liquors in his business on principle, and at a great sacrifice of his previous profits, before any public movement in the temperance cause.
