Note

He was in early life a fisherman, and made two voyages to the North seas and one to Spitzbergen. He removed to Williamsburgh, Massachusetts, in 1772. His brothers, George and William, shipwrights at New Bedford, Massachusetts, laid down and built the U.S. frigate "Constitution" and the celebrated ship "Rebecca" (launched 17 March 1785), the first that ever doubled Cape Horn, and brought home a cargo of sperm oil from the Pacific.
