Crider - McDowell Family Tree

He was a farmer at Hartford, Vermont, for a short time (1769-72), as he is recorded there as town clerk at that time and appears as a surveyor.  Where he was previously is not certain, but probably at Hebron.  In 1773, he with a few others began the settlement of Woodstock, Vermont.  With his son-in-law Benjamin Burch, he put up a log house and opened the first tavern in the town.  In 1775 and 1776, he was one of the council of safety chosen for Cumberland county, and was in 1776-7 a captain of a company of Rangers under Gen. Schuyler.  He was several times chosen a member of the legislature of Vermont (7777, 8, and 9, and in 1782).  Various town trusts and offices were often committed to him.  In 1778-9, he built a saw-mill and grist-mill, which he kept in lively motion, together with his inn, and was a man whose heart and hands were at all times full of business.  In 1804, when 81 years old and poor, he removed with his grandson, Benjamin Burch, Jr., to Argenteuil, Canada, near Montreal, where after two years he died, and his wife soon followed him to the grave.
