Note
He enlisted as a private, 14 August 1862, in Company H, 32nd Iowa Vol. Infantry, and was mustered into the U.S. service at Dubuque, 6 October 1862. His regiment was stationed on garrison duty (1862-3), at New Madrid, Missouri, Fort Pillow, Tennessee, and Columbus, Kentucky, and Island No. 10, Tennessee. He was sick much of the time with intermittent fever, and chronic diarrhea, and was discharged 2 July 1865, with much impaired health. He was made Sergt. 1 August 1863, and detached as clerk in the provost marshal's office in March 1864, at Island No. 10. He was in the battles of Tapello and Old Town Creek. |
