OAK RIDGE HAPPENINGS

[By Capt. Ridge, Jr.]

Dec. 26, 1885

Jos. [Joseph] Rudy, of Chestnut Ridge, was in our burg recently.

S. Moore and wife, of Avon, are celebrating Christmas in our parts at present.

Rev. Jos. [Joseph] Cheesebrough, of this place, attended church at Chestnut Ridge last Sunday.

F. Vogt drove some beef cattle to Ste. Genevieve one day this week and sold them to Louis Nauman.

Our friend, P. J. Ponder, of the Farmington Institute, made his appearance here on Wednesday night last.

It is whispered in our ears that there is to be a wedding in these parts soon. Hurry, we'd like to have a piece of cake.

Jos. [Joseph] Herman, one of our dudes, got the best of the first snow this season by killing a deer; he will get fat on venison now.

Wm. [William] Gordon made a trip to Ste. Genevieve last week, to meet some relatives of his from Illinois, but, navigation being interrupted, they could not get on this side.

We learn that a protracted meeting began at Pleasant Hill on Thursday night last, with Revs. Counse, Carver, and Coffer as leaders of the society. The nights are nice at present and the time good.

We learn that Thos. [Thomas] Cheesbrough, on his road to Ste. Genevieve one day last week, lost one of his favorite dogs; it is of a dark brown color and has one glass eye and can be easily distinguished by the above description.

We notice another correspondent to the Herald has chipped in from Zell. We wish Don Carlos much success in his undertaking that he may furnish sufficient locals for the Herald, as it is devoted to the interest of Ste. Genevieve Co. and a welcome guest at every home.

The colored folks of this place have been holding a protracted meeting in our burg lately, adjourning one night last week, but met again yesterday with a very nice Christmas tree in the church. We learn that they have about 85 members at present, Rev. Etna as leader.

Our esteemed townsman Jos. [Joseph] Boyd moved into his new house recently. He says that when he commenced to build his house, a correspondent of the Herald, "Snooks", was to furnish him with cigars during the cold winter and he is now ready to smoke them but if Capt. Ridge, Jr., justly remembers, he was to buy and smoke them.
