At the breaking out of the war he took a commission as captain of Co. K, 21st Regiment, O. Vols., and was made major, 1 August 1861. His regiment belonged to the third Division of the army, Gen. Mitchell commanding. They were sent to Atlanta, Georgia, Huntsville, Alabama, Chattanooga, Tennessee, etc., to defend forts, guard rail roads, and cut off supplies of the rebels. He was discharged on account of ill health, in the fall of 1863.
