Notes

Note

In our foregoing research concerning the CLUBB or KLOPP family we had found reference to Peter Clubb/Klopps etc in some numbers amongst both the Protestant and Catholic communities of northern DEU.
The presence of a Caspar CLUBB or KLOPP on both sides of the Atlantic was highly relevant, we considered, and for this reason we had considered that the 1716 baptism of Peter was particularly exciting.
At this stage we considered the baptismal entries at the Solingen Evangelical Church in more detail. The following references were found in all:
Johannes Wilhelmus the son of Peter Klop was christened on 13 Jan 1707 Evangelisch, Solingen
Peter the son of Peter Klop was christened on 6 Aug 1709 " "
Anna Catharina the daugther of Peter CLUBB or KLOPP was christened on 30 Oct 1714 " "
Peter the son of Peter Klop was christened on 25 Jan 1716 " "
Anna Gertrud the daughter of Peter Klop was christened on 10 Oct 1717 " "
Catharina Gertrud daughter of Peter Klop was christenedd on 13 Oct 1718 " "
Maria Elisabeth the daughter of Peter Klop was christened on 13 Oct 1718 " "
Catharina Maria Elisabeth the daughter of Peter Klop was christened on 27 Oct 1719 "
Anna Christina the daughter of Peter Clubb/Klopp/ was christened on 26 Jun 1723 " "
Gerdrudt the daughter of Peter CLUBB or KLOPP was christened on 26 June 1723 " "

We noted that there was a gap between the baptism of Peter and Anna of five years and we wondered whether other children were born during this period and baptized elsewhere, or alternatlively, if perhaps there were two Peter Klops producing children in the Solingen area at this time. "
- "Other scholars suggested that the name simply derived from the middle-English Clubb/Klopp/Kloppe or Clobbe meanign a club and was thereafter a metonymic or occupational name relating to "a maker of clubs." Numerous early entries exist in the spelling format Clobbere where it was thought to have associations with the medieval feudal system of dues and obligations whereby, according to the Assize of Arms every adult man had to be provided with at least a knife and a staff or club for purposes of protecing the realm.
We were not particularly convinced by any of these interpretations and decided that it would be worth checking the only other Peter Club entry we had encountered, albeit for the Palantine area of DEU. We were fascinated to note the following:
1748 Militia Returns Carolina
Peter Club no. 30
Peter Clob/Club and wife Margrete received 315 acres on the 14th July 1753, and 250 acres on 19 Oct 1753 all on Leepers Creek. Peter was mentioned in the Militia Returns, as was a kinsman Gasper Klob, who appeared as early as 26 July 1767. Gasper was never mentioned in a land holding capacity. There was also specifically mentioned, a son Peter Klob/Club who appeared in a deed dated 17 May 1784.
These details were abstracted from a work concerning German settlers west of the Catawba which rather alerted us to the possibility of Germanic rather than English origins.
Following up this element we were fascinated to find the following:
Petrus Klop married Margaretha Kuerten on the 15th April 1742 Solingen Evangelical Church Rheinhessen
