Note
He enlisted, 28 February 1864, in Co. B, 25th Ohio Vol. Infantry. His regiment did picket duty on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, during the summer of 1864. In the battle of Honey Hill (General Foster, Dept. Commander), the 25th Ohio suffered severely — losing 34 officers, and from a third to a half of all its men in action (losing out of some 650, in killed and wounded, 254). The battle opened in the morning, and at about 2:30 p.m., he received a gun-shot wound in the left side of his neck, severely disabling his left arm and causing him from then on incessant pain and sometimes very severe. The ball was never extracted from the spot to which it was sent. He was honorably discharged from the service 3 June 1865. |
