He enlisted, 4 December 1861, for 3 years in Company D, First Connecticut Calvary; was at first commissary and quarter master of his company; afterwards did duty in the provost marshal's office at Baltimore, Maryland, as Sergeant of a guard of deserters, stragglers, rebel prisoners and disloyal citizens; in August, 1863, he was ordered to New Haven, Connecticut as commissary of a rendezvous established there for recruits and drafted men from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont. He was mustered out of service, 4 December, 1864.
