Note

Exempt from war- bad foot.  Because of his vast knowledge of horses, was commissioned by president Lincoln to buy horses for the Union Army during Civil War. Most of his buying and trading of horses was done in Fredericksburg Pennsylvania.
Became an auctioneer by accident. One day when he was 18, he went to a sale but the caller never showed up. He agreed to try to "CRY" the auction and did so well that after that day, he was in great demand as an auctioneer.
Bought and owned the Humeston Hotel  in Humeston Iowa in 1871. Ran it for several years before selling it and moving his family to a farm.
Lived for many years on the farm after wife died but finally moved to Red Oak Iowa to live with his son Joseph. He died there at the age of 92.
