Notes

Note

My uncle, Jesse K. Hays, was close to his brother and sister. My Dad, Samuel P. Hays, was a truck driver most of his life; as a memeber of the Teamster's union, Dad was sometimes "on strike"--with no money coming in. Uncle Jesse often helped him out. Uncle Jesse visited and we visited him in Ottawa, Kansas, where he lived on the second floor in the commercial hub of all small towns back in the '40's and 50's--Main street. When we visited as small children, it was lots of fun, because right downstairs was a movie theater we got to go to, and then there were the "parties" that always seemed to go on at Uncle Jesse's place. There because right downstairs was a movie theater we got to go to, and then there were the "parties" that always seemed to go on at Uncle Jesse's place. There were several tables in one or two special rooms of his aprtment, and his "friends" came and played cards. My brother, Richard, and I were often given the pennies that were in the piles of coins on the tables at these special games. Only much later as an adult did we figure out that Uncle Jesse ran an illegal gambling parlor in his apartment. Although he was, supposedly, a cabinet maker, his main occupation was gambling. See the article "Held for Gambling" published by the Herald Newspaper, Ottawa, Kansas.
